History

From idea to reality

The idea of this unique institution, which is the only one of its kind in Europe, stems originally from a group of persons representing the packaging industry. Packaging forms its own cluster around the Schaffhausen – Lake of Constance area, in which the European aluminum industry was founded. It’s also where e.g. the laminate tube of toothpaste was developed and pharma blister was invented. In these days, the area is proud to have world market leaders in the packaging industry such as SIG, Alcan and Bosch as well as packing companies from the food and pharmaceutical sectors such as Nestlé, Unilever Bestfoods, Cilag (Johnson & Johnson) and Altana. The companies cooperated with representatives from state authorities in Switzerland and Germany as well as universities to jointly develop the concept which the IPI represents.
